Deckenbild im Burschenschaftsdenkmal

The monument of fraternity was built in 1900 weithin a 2-year period of construction, based on the architectural plans done by Wilhelm Kreis. In May 1902 it was consecrated. In memory of the first Wartburgfestival in 1817, where students and professors requisitioned officially the overcoming of the german sectionalism for the first time. At this time they compiled the first liberal constitutional Bill, based on the Wartburg decrees. As a result of this, Eisenach was determined to be the location of this motion. In due time the colouring of the dome was done by the subsequent member of the artist group "Die Brücke" (The Bridge) named Otto Gassman (1869-1926). Ist baize shows on about 120 square Meters the battle between the nordic gods with the mights of darkness. In front of a mythical dark background and centered around a golden sun, the viewer sees voluminous figures wrestling in Armageddon. Todays painting isn't a restoration, but a new colouring of a traditional message. The original painting, held in the 19th century pathos, got lost, because of incoming dampness and damages in the dome area, which were a result of decades of neglection during GDR times. For this reason a new dome for replacement had to be built, in which since July 2006 the new mural was drawn. A special challenge was to draw the plasticity of the figures. The dome curve influences the perception of proportions strongly, which is why the artist had to work with a huge sense of proportion and sure instinct for brightness and dramatic in the scene. The colouring of the dome lasted until December 2006, which the artist accomplished by himself.
